OPSWAT's Q1 Market Share Report Names Symantec as the North American Market Leader

San Francisco, CA — March 8, 2011 — OPSWAT released their latest quarterly antivirus market share reports today, adding a peer to peer application section for the first time. The report announces leading antivirus vendors and products in North America and worldwide, Windows OS usage in North America and worldwide, and peer to peer (P2P) market share worldwide.

OPSWAT, the industry leader in software management SDKs, interoperability certification and multiple-engine scanning solutions, analyzed more than ninety-two thousand opt-in reports from endpoints worldwide. The reports, generated by OPSWAT's AppRemover and Am I OESIS OK? tools, utilize the detection capabilities of the OESIS Framework to give insights to the applications installed on the endpoint computer.

Among the highlights of the report was the announcement of Avast, Avira and AVG as the top three antivirus vendors worldwide. Avast maintained its top position from OPSWAT's previous antivirus report, and Avira and AVG increased their rankings from December. In North America, the top three vendors are Symantec, AVG and Avast.

"Free antivirus solutions remain the most popular; each of the top three antivirus products in North America is a free product," said Benny Czarny, CEO of OPSWAT. Microsoft Security Essentials is the top antivirus product in North America, while Avast! Free Antivirus leads the worldwide market.

OPSWAT also reported that Windows 7 usage continues to increase in North America and worldwide, while both Windows XP and Windows Vista decline in usage. In the North American market, Windows XP fell below 50% for the first time since being tracked by OPSWAT's reports.

The top three worldwide P2P applications, as detected in this report, are uTorrent, Ares and Emule. Jeff Garon, Director of Marketing at OPSWAT, commented, "Our data shows that over half of the P2P market is controlled by the top three vendors, with uTorrent standing out as the top application by a wide margin." In the 92,647 reports analyzed by OPSWAT, 42,309 P2P applications were detected.
